Luke 5:3â11
âWhen He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, âPut out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.â Simon answered, âMaster, weâve worked hard all night and havenât caught anything. But because You say so, I will let down the nets.ââ â Luke 5:4â5 (NIV)
Devotional Thought
Sometimes, we labor endlesslyâpouring our time, effort, and emotion into things that leave us feeling empty. Like Peter and the fishermen, weâve âworked hard all nightâ and caught nothing. But then Jesus steps into our boat.
When Jesus asked Peter to go back out and try again, it didnât make sense. Peter was an experienced fisherman; he had done everything right. Yet the difference this time wasnât in how he fishedâit was who was in the boat.
Jesusâ presence changes everything. When Peter obeyed, the same waters that were empty moments before overflowed with abundance. Thatâs the miracle of faithâitâs not about our strength or timing, but about our obedience to His word.
âBecause You say soâ is one of the most powerful faith declarations in Scripture. Itâs surrender wrapped in trust. Itâs saying, âEven though Iâm tired, even though Iâve failed before, Iâll try again if Youâre leading me.â
When the nets broke from the weight of the catch, Peter realized the true miracle wasnât the fishâit was the presence of the Holy One in his midst. In awe, he fell at Jesusâ feet, confessing his unworthiness. Yet Jesus didnât turn him away. Instead, He called him higher:
âDonât be afraid; from now on you will fish for people.â
Peter left everything behindâthe nets, the catch, the boatâto follow Jesus. The same man who once said, âGo away from me, Lord,â became the one Jesus would use to build His church.
Reflection Questions
Where in your life are you weary from âfishing all nightâ with no results?
What might Jesus be asking you to do againâthis time, trusting His word over your experience?
What âboatâ or ânetâ might you need to surrender for His purpose?
How can your obedience today draw others closer to Christ?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for stepping into my boat. Even when Iâm tired and discouraged, help me to trust Your word and obey. Take me into deeper waters of faith where my own strength ends and Your power begins. Fill my life with Your presence and use me to draw others to You. I surrender my plans for Your purpose. In Your name I pray, Amen.
â¨A Gentle Nudge to Keep Going
When your efforts feel fruitless, rememberâJesus still speaks into empty nets. Your breakthrough might be one step of obedience away. Donât give up; launch out into the deep again, because He said so.
